On Thursday 19 June, Small Boats: The Border Conundrum screened to a near-capacity audience at Duke’s at Komedia in Brighton. The documentary, which explores the complex politics and human stories behind small boat crossings in the English Channel, looked stunning on the big screen — a proud moment for the filmmakers and team behind the project.

The event featured a post-screening panel discussion, expertly moderated by Manuel Kojo Koranteng, News and Content Officer at the University of Brighton. The panel brought together a mix of academic insight and first-hand experience, including:

  • Dr. Anne Daguerre, co-producer of the film
  • Nick Lazar, director and co-producer
  • Dr. Sophie Watt, senior lecturer at the University of Sheffield and one of the film’s interviewees
  • Dr. Stefan Speckesser, Dean of the University of Brighton’s Business School

Audience members engaged the panel with a range of thoughtful, often challenging questions — fuelling a lively and reflective conversation about migration policy, public perception, and the future of cross-border cooperation.

We’re grateful to everyone who attended and contributed to such a meaningful evening. The film continues to spark important conversations, and we’re looking forward to sharing it with more audiences soon.
